Íris Ásmundardóttir

Born and raised in Iceland, Íris began her dance training at the age of 3. After graduating from the National Ballet School of Iceland in 2018, Íris went on to study at Rambert School in London, where she graduated in 2021 with a first class BA (Hons) in Ballet and Contemporary Dance. She is now a member of Emergence Postgraduate Company under the direction of Joss Arnott, where she will tour a mixed bill of work, starting in Spring 2022. The performance includes newly commissioned work by choreographers Kevin Finnan, Vidya Patel, and Gosia Mielech, as well as Joss Arnott's piece Wild Shadows.

Íris has great appreciation of technique, and detailed, physical dancing. Her movement language has been described as smooth, elongated, and dynamic. She enjoys to work musically and rhythmically, and has great interest in the relationship between music and movement.

As a dance artist, Íris believes in using movement and dance as a form of expression, and portraying emotion, by giving each movement its purpose and value. Having been described as a 'captivating, unapologetic, and elegant performer', she strives to move the audience, by sparking something new within each spectator.

While studying in Iceland she had the opportunity to work with choreographer Lára Stefánsdóttir for a collaborative project with the Icelandic Symphonic Orchestra, and attend summer schools abroad, including Alonzo King LINES Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. During her time at Rambert School, she had the opportunity to work with Julie Cunningham for her piece Slant, which was scheduled to be performed at Sadlers Wells in March 2020. In her third year Íris also worked with choreographers Vidya Patel and Cameron McMillan for Rambert Schools ‘Next Generation’ performance, which was performed at Linbury Theatre and Anya Linden Studio Theatre. Furthermore, in her final year at Rambert School, Íris recieved the Lionel Bart Foundation scholarship award.

Íris is a certified barre instructor from The Barre Collective in London, and has been teaching classes alongside her dancing.
